NURSING
The Art of Nursing
When I was a teenager I remember crying so hard that I could not fall asleep at night. The one thing that I would need is someone to come into my room and comfort me and my feelings. I remember that being my mom and she would come in nurture me, then I would drift off to sleep. These are things you remember the most growing up. These are the same feelings that a client would remember when he or she would be laying helplessly in the hospital. Each client would remember the soft touch of a nurse’s hand. The nurse in a hospital setting is to care, nurture, and be there for the patients. This all includes the art of nursing. Each nurse will use his or her knowledge to make the outcome as at ease as possible. The nurse uses the art when the client feels that the outcome of the care is a preferred result. First impressions are important in today’s culture. The nurses have to communicate with the patient so the patient will become more comfortable in the surroundings. The language that the nurses use will help the client become more comfortable. Each nurse is going to develop many different relationships with everyone, including their clients. There is no one art for nurses. Each nurse has to develop there own niche and be able to be flexible, because no one client is the same, and each client presents the nurse with a different difficulty. Every nurse has to develop the art so the desire effect is the outcome of every treatment.
The Science of Nursing
From a simple shot in the arm, holding your hand when you get an IV, or being part of a transplant team which is helping the doctors giving a man a new heart is all the science that the nurse has to be proficient in. Each nurse has to attend special schooling and receive an education that prepares the nurse to be able to be skillful in the science of nursing. Each nurse has to able to treat the ill, prevent diseases, and advocate for the patients. Each nurse has to able to use the correct medical terminology and be able to perform the correct procedures. Each nurse has to take his or hers education and apply her knowledge and take a situation and solve it.
SUMMARIES
Summary of Scrubs
My First Day starts off with a new intern, right out of a four year medical school, starting his first day in the hospital. The show starts out explaining to the new interns what to do if they make a mistake, and explains to avoid all lawsuits. They meets their Residents, as they learn to interact with other doctors and patients. This show takes a serious situation and adds comedy. The older doctors explain to the interns that they just have to stay sane enough to really help the people that need help. During the second night, the new intern is on call, which he has to be in the hospital all night. He relies on the nurses to do procedures that he is uncomfortable about doing. If the doctors find out that the interns are relying on the nurses to do the medical procedures they will be at risk of getting kicked out of the medical program.
Summary of Pearl Harbor
At the start of the movie Pearl Harbor there is a recap of the United States (US) past history about going into the war. America does not want to join the war at all costs. But soon we will find out that the peace negotiations will fail with the Japanese. Mean while two young men who have always wanted to become pilots join the US Army. One gets deployed to fly in the British Air Force, leaving to the other one to go to Pearl Harbor to the Army base. Rafe is declared dead and Danny falls in love with the same women that Rafe was once in love with. This creates an evil love triangle, which soon will be forgotten by the events of the war. They both fall in love with a Navy nurse. Rafe returns unexpectedly. The Americans are unprepared of what the Japanese are going to do. On December 7, 1941, they attack Pearl Harbor. The shooting seems to last forever. We were untrained for the ending results of the attacks.
HOW NURSING IS PORTRAYED
The Art of Nursing Portrayed in the Media
In Pearl Harbor, the Japanese bomb the entire military base. They came through with fighter jets and shot everything in their sight. Many personal had horrific injuries, to the extent that most would die. The nurses played a crucial role in directing the doctors and the patients. After the bombings the hospital was fanatic. What the viewers saw was the nurses standing out in an emergent situation. Nurses would run through out the hospital franticly looking for supplies to help the doctors and to take care of the hurt. One nurse was sent to do triage. She would separate the living from the dieing and dead. She did not want to because she could not judge the hurt. She would communicate with the staff and the patients. One part shows to nurses communicating with the doctors by using her lipstick. They would write on the foreheads in triage to tell the doctors the extent of the injuries. The nurses use communication to help better care for the injured.
In the show Scrubs, one nurse advocated for them selves and the patients against a big shot intern. She was telling the intern that she lives for the hospital that she works for. She showed that she really cared for the patients, the doctors, and everyone who benefited from having the nurse there. She said that she wanted to look good for the people that she was caring for. In both media presentation, both nurses were practicing the art of nursing by advocating for their patients. They both wanted to be at work, no one was complaining about there jobs or what they had to do. In Pearl Harbor, the nurses were scrabbling around to help the patients, communicating, and coming out with and a desired effect. This was the same with Scrubs; the nurse is sticking up for her self, so see is coming out with the best desired effect that benefited everyone.
In Pearl Harbor, the art of nursing was portrayed differently. The nurses was communicating with the doctors and giving care to the patients. This was different then in Scrubs; the nurse that had the run-in with the intern was not sticking or talking about and individual patients like Pearl Harbor.
The Science of Nursing Portrayed in the Media
In the movie Pearl Harbor, after the Japanese bombed most of the Army’s training base there was and uncontrolled amount of people that were rushed into the hospital. Many soldiers showed up at the hospital in dire need of attention. The nurse’s job was to make sure they were comfortable by giving the soldiers pain medication. The nurses would run frantically around to find the right equipment, to help the doctors. They would give them shots, help in surgery, and help predict outcomes of the patient. There was one scene that the nurses would have to predict the outcome. They told the badly burned patient that he would not make in through the night and they gave enough pain killers to make him contented. We saw the nurses using there education to make these decisions.
In the show Scrubs, many of the new interns were not comfortable doing medical procedures. They would rely on the nurses to do the job. The nurses would step in to saves the patient’s life. One patient was going to die, unless the inter would state and intravenous medication. The intern was not comfortable about doing this procedure, so the doctor required the nurse to step in. The nurses would be forced to job in and save a client’s life by performing the act.
Both media performances, both the nurses would help the clients be comfortable. Both nurses would be the first to know the patients problems. The nurse is the primary contact to the surrounding medical team. If the client was in pain and needed a pain killer the nurse would be the first person to know this. Pearl Harbor is different then Scrubs because in the movie the nurses would have to make their own judgment calls to help the client. They would not have time or resources to go and get the doctors permission to give the patient morphine. They would have to use their education to make the client comfortable. In the show, the interns would instruct the nurse to help or to do a procedure. They would take there knowledge and wait to be instructed to do something. They would have to be told by a doctor to help with and intravenous line.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME TO BE A NURSE
In the show, Scrubs and Pearl Harbor reinforced my understanding of what a nurse should do. My understanding of a nurse’s job description is that we have to give quality care with our knowledge and understanding of our education. This includes the complete understanding of both the art of science of nursing. Each nurse in both shows showed that they had education to be aware of their surroundings and make sure every patient was treated to the best of their ability. In the movie, the main nurse who was to monitor the patient flow into the hospital took her understanding about pain control and was able to do the job. In the show, the nurse was able to understand how to do specific procedures to make the patients comfortable. Both media portrayals showed that both nurses understood the art and the science of nursing. This is what we have to be able to do when we are a nurse, is to understand both the art and the science of nursing.
CONCLUSION
Nurses have many roles in the medical settings. They have to be aware of their surroundings, delegate nursing tasks, give quality care, and be there for the patients. These roles go deeper then what is said. They have to develop the art and science to the job. The art of nursing includes transactions, the outcome, and communication. On the other hand, the science of nursing includes the practice of procedures, predicting outcomes, and using the education to predicting and solving problems. These two roles of nursing are important to the patient so they have a good desired outcome. These movies give a good basis to learn what the roles of nursing are, but they don’t give you the whole picture of what exactly you are going to achieve.
The means of being a professional nurse comes with a lot of responsibility. Nurses are there to help any one in any situation, to have an open mind, to care for people at any time in their life, and to good attitude about life. Nurses make a huge difference in caring, advocating, and neutralizing the situations. They help the client come back to their best health possible or help them become comfortable in their last days of life. Every nurse should be committed to their clients. They should never walk away from a situation in an inappropriate way. The nurse should feel comfortable when dealing with clients of any health state. A nurse should keep an open mind on what is happening, and keep an open opinion about other’s cultural views. Health is a state of the body, meaning that it can be physical, emotional and mental state.

Year of graduation: 2009
Year of graduation from High school: 2005
Degree upon graduation: RN, BS of science
Career goals: After completing the course work of the University of New Hampshire, I will graduate and work in a hospital setting. I want to work in a populated area, working with the underserved. Working with the underserved will be a privilege for me because I know I will change people’s life. I would like to work with the kids because each child needs a role model in life, and I hope to be that role model by providing care for them.
I am interested in nursing because I want to be part of a helping profession. I feel like I have a lot of exploration into this career. I know that I have a lot to offer our society. I know that I want to help communities. This motivation has helped me develop into a caring person and my interest has grown stronger. I am a LNA and I have looked up to my LNA teacher. She took her time to teach me and help me to obtain jobs that I would learn and benefit from. I would see how nurses would help the population as a whole and individuals as a part.
Goals of Nursing:
  • Graduate with a RN degree which allows me to follow my personal philosophy, standard nursing philosophy, and the code of ethnics
  • I want to be able to find a job that allows me to practice in a safe environment and allows me to help the population as a whole, and help the individuals.
  • I want to be able to specify by helping kids in the emergency room. This has been my dreams for years, so I want to be able to for fill my dreams.
Amie Long's Philosophy of Nursing
Each person needs medical help in a point in life. It might be the first day that they were born, or the last day that they are here, but each person requires nursing. Healthcare should be an alienable right. Each person should be able to obtain equal health care across the board. As a nurse acting in a professional way, and guided by the ethnics of the profession, I want to treat everyone with equality and empathy.
Volunteer History

I would bring my dog, Molly and help the elders by giving them loving attention from a female K-9. This helped me realize that taking one hour, I would put smiles on 50 residents.
The Significance of Nursing:
In today’s society health care is need by everyone. People rely on the nursing profession to care, advocate, alleviate pain, promote health, and protect clients from more harm. It is important for nurses to develop a trusting relationship with caring touch.
